Wood4Wood: pallet recycling with quarterly green certificate
Our Wood4Wood programme seamlessly aligns with the MCB companies sustainability vision. By 2030, we aim to reuse at least 80% of our pallets. Therefore, we collect all pallets free of charge during the return trips of our deliveries. This can be done on request or on scheduled pick-up days. After inspection and any necessary repairs, the pallets are reused as much as possible. Each quarter, you will receive a guaranteed green certificate with the amount of CO2 saved, which you can use for your sustainability reporting (Scope 3). In this way, we contribute together to the sustainability of the metal supply chain.

Scope 3 CO2 reduction
Each green certificate can be used for your sustainability reporting and is guaranteed by DNV.
Efficiency and sustainability
MCB supplies pallets to customers of sheet material. This includes standard pallets, custom pallets, slit pallets, and specific pallets. We collect used pallets during the return trips of our deliveries to minimise our trucks' empty running time. This collection occurs on demand or on prearranged days. We also offer the option to collect pallets from other suppliers or loose wood.
Every quarter, we calculate the number of pallets we have collected from each customer and and the amount of CO2 saved as a result. Participants in our Wood4Wood programme receive a green certificate for this purpose, which can be used for their sustainability reporting (Scope 3). Upon return, the collected pallets are sorted, inspected, and repaired if necessary. This process ensures each pallet can be reused at least five times. For every eight reused pallets, we save one tree.
How does it work?

-
At MCB, the pallets are registered per customer, checked, and sorted
-

-
Each quarter, the total amount of CO2 savings per customer is recorded in a green certificate

New Wood4Wood hall
In 2024, we will begin construction of a new hall dedicated to the collection and processing of returned pallets. The integrated sawing department will be expanded with new sawing machines, allowing us to not only repair more pallets, but also to process leftover wood more efficiently into crates, custom pallets, chocks, and more.
Our wood recycling department
What started as an experiment has become an integral part of MCB: our wood recycling department. A team of eight dedicated employees works daily to sort, repair, and process the returned pallets. Most of them are retired and have chosen to continue contributing to our Wood4Wood programme.
